Short Bio:
My name is Richie Decker and I became a college professor at 24 in 2006. I won the professorof the year award in 2014 ( tinyurl.com/award2357 ) However, my rate of success with mystudents was the same as all other professors…that is until I stopped blaming the students andtook responsibility for my class. AurieI found the solution was the students did not have the righthabits to succeed. I started teaching habits before I taught math (from books like 7 Habits ofHighly Effective People and Atomic Habits) and learned that there was low trust betweenstudents and professors, starting with a long syllabus full of threats. I then spent Day #1allowing my students to write the syllabus, come to an agreement with me on the policies of theclass, put it all on one page with ZERO threats. We then established mutual trust with the toolsfrom the book Speed of Trust. My student success rate went to near 100%! Even failing students took responsibility andsigned up for my class again. My students told me they just wanted me to teach topics like habits, time management, trust, financial literacy, practical philosophy, and conflict resolutioninstead of math, which they didn’t want to learn and would not use. They told me I should leavecollege and start my own business, focusing on habits and how to be successful in life. So, Itook the risk, and now I am a life coach.
